This Weekend Shavathon Colours HOPE @ Shopping Centres
We can't wait to see you at our 16th national Shavathon happening at participating shopping centres across the country, this Saturday, 2nd March and at selected venues on Sunday, 3rd March 2019. Invite everyone who matters to join you at your local shopping centre event.
We’d like to give a huge shout out to our dedicated volunteers in advance. Thank you for your commitment and hard work! Thanks also to the SABC Foundation and regional media partners for helping to boost Shavathon via radio and TV ads:
What to Expect:
Participating provides an opportunity for everyone, young or old, to be involved in ‘Colouring Hope’, by spraying or stenciling their hair, or shaving their head, or donating a ponytail that will go towards making a wig for a cancer Survivor. Participation costs R50 per adult, and R25 for children u/12. We've kept our price the same for 15 years to keep participation affordable and this year we will have Limited Edition CANSA Colouring Hope Wraps (R50) and CANSA Colouring Books & Crayons (R25) for kids at selected venues too. Selfie boards are also available to share the fun and action with others while creating awareness of cancer and the need to support cancer Survivors (patients), caregivers and loved ones. Limited edition badges of honour will be given to those who make hair donations of 25 cm or longer. Blood drives will take place at certain venues, as cancer patients may benefit from blood donations during treatment (consult our venue directory to confirm if there will be a blood drive at your shopping centre event).
‘Colouring HOPE’ is all about giving those diagnosed or affected by cancer HOPE and support. While the words ‘colouring’ and ‘hope’ might not be top of mind when thinking of cancer, CANSA would like to emphasize that a diagnosis is no longer a death sentence. More people are living beyond cancer, and they need a public show of support to encourage them to keep fighting the disease and to adapt to living with the side effects of treatment.
We hope you’ll join us in showing those affected by cancer that they are not alone! Funds raised will go towards CANSA's care and support programmes for cancer Survivors (patients) and loved ones.
Shavathon is an opportunity for us to support cancer patients and stand in solidarity with them.
Cheryl Samuel shares why she donated her hair: “My dad is a stage 4 cancer Survivor. He was diagnosed on the 12th of January 2018. It has been a long and tough road for him, as well as my family, as we witnessed him go through his treatment. Physically being there for all his chemo and radiation treatments, I have seen so many ladies affected by this killer disease. So I decided to grow my hair. This year on 12 January 2019 I chopped off 32 cm’s of my hair. I really hope my contribution will put a smile on a Survivor’s face.”
We hope you’ll consider showing a Survivor you care too, through your Shavathon participation.
Shavathon is also an opportunity for cancer patients and loved ones to honour their journey, and to remember loved ones lost to cancer.
Daryl Burt explains why she is doing Shavathon this year: “Last year I did Shavathon on a whim. I was going through a very stressful period and walking through Randridge Mall. I came across the Shavathon and had my medium length bob shaved down to a “Number 5” and spray painted in all the colours of the rainbow. It was so liberating. It was also kind of prophetic, as little did I know that four months later I would be diagnosed with breast cancer and undergo a double mastectomy. This year I will be doing Shavathon to mark the road I have travelled in the last year.”
It is a time to laugh, have fun, reflect, shed a tear, to be thankful, and to pay respect to those fighting cancer, alongside others who are similarly affected.

Online Fundraising Champions
We'd like to thank our amazing Online Fundraising Champions for making their Shavathon participation count even more, by creating an online fundraising project. Whether they are shaving or donating hair, they will be asking for their contacts' support through online donations to raise additional funds for care and support of those affected by cancer.

Nikki Brooks
Beer en die Boer, Chris Baumann, Nico de Beer and myself have been personally touched by the trauma of cancer and we would like to do our part in raising as much funds as we can! Mignon van Staden, our young warrior princess, who was diagnosed with Burkitt's Lymphona at age 15, recently went into remission after many months of harsh chemo treatment due to the aggressive nature of this cancer. We have lost many people close to our hearts due to cancer. Help us give back and hope to those still fighting!

I am chopping off my hair for the CANSA Shavathon. In July 2017, I cut off my ponytail to donate towards making a wig and I've been growing my hair fast and furiously ever since. This Saturday, 2nd March, I'm cutting it even shorter to donate again, and to raise money for the CANSA Shavathon.

Irony is, I had decided to grow my hair for the CANSA Shavathon before we got the news... this time last year, I was going through what caregivers will know as one of the roughest times of your life, and then I went through the worst time and worst year of my life. My mom was my best friend and my hero. She gave everything and did anything for us, and now I want to pay it back by giving a little of what I can do for her. My hair is currently at 31 cm (which I’d like to donate) - my challenge to all my family, friends, their friends and family, and even their companies - I would love for your donations to match my hair length - so, R3-10; R31-00; R310-00, etc. I actually can't wait to see how much more my hair will have grown by the CANSA Shavathon! I'm so excited and this year is going to make such a huge impact on my life, not to mention, I'm really hoping, the lives of those around me too! I hope that a little bit of inspiration will go a long way with all the donations of hair, finances, joy and enthusiasm. I think this is such a unique way of helping others out. 2019 CANSA Shavathon - how short the shave is up to you! i'm an astronomer from KwaZulu-Natal who is passionate about giving back - donating blood, getting on the bone marrow registry, etc. Something I've always wanted to do was shave my head for CANSA, but I've never quite gotten up the courage. In November last year, I decided 2019, the year I turn 30, would be the year. To cement my resolve, just before Christmas, the world became poorer when a friend lost his cancer battle. He also would have turned 30 this year. Although my hair grows fast, it'll be approximately 2 years until I can do this again, so I'd like to take the current opportunity to also help raise funds for CANSA. On the 2nd of March 2019, at the annual CANSA Shavathon, I'll be donating my ponytail, and then shaving the rest. How short it goes (#4 to #1) is up to you:
R0 - R499 --> #4 ; R500 - R1499 --> #3 ; R1500 - R2999 --> #2 ; R3000+ --> #1

It’s not too late to open an online fundraising page of your own. Winners who have raised the most funds will be determined on 31st March 2019, and announced in April. So there’s still lots of time to bring in donations towards your Shavathon participation and win amazing prizes.
Shavathon Host Events
