"Firenado" is actually "Fire Whirl"

The Garden Route has again been ravaged by wildfires that destroyed about 86 000 hectares. This is 4 times more than the 2017 Knysna fires. 

Above, you can see what is described as a "firenado" which is more accurately described as a "fire whirl". This happened in the De Vlugt area, 55km from Plett. According to South African Weather Service chief forecaster, Kevin Rae, this happens when:

"Surface air rushes in, to replace air which is ascending very rapidly at the site of the fire. This sudden accumulation of air at the base of the fire tends to feed it further, increasing the intensity of the fire. One typically ends up with a very dramatic-looking column of rising air and flames, twisted into a helical (helix-shaped) column."
